29 DAYS AND COUNTING TEAM UPDATE: March 29, 2007 Wild Miles Teammates: Every day (or every other day) I will be sending you a few tips to consider as race day(s) get closer. Some of the tips are ones we've learned along the way and others are ones that I've gleaned from various experiences (i.e. altitude climbing, cycling and triathlons) and running colleagues. As well, if you have tips to share, email them to me and I'll compile them together and send them out. Before I share a few tips with you, below are a couple of WMR updates.
The only team member for which I need CONTACT INFORMATION is James Gonzalez. James, can you send that to me soon?
I'm still waiting for maps to be posted on the WMR website. As soon as they're posted, I'll link them to our website and notify you.
As we move one day closer to the WMR, here's a few tips to consider to prepare... Consider bringing your own roll of toilet paper on the WMR. Regardless of the number of gas stations and porta potties that are along the course, there is always need for an emergency roll. As well, a number of the porta potties visited along the route last year were without toilet paper due to the amount of use by teams. I personally had to run a 7-mile leg while holding it (#2) all in as there was no toilet paper available at the transition station!
Pack
lean - but be sure to prepare for all sorts of weather.
In past years, the weather has been dry and arid. But this may not always
be the case, so think about bringing two large green garbage bags, a large
drying towel for yourself and a few changes of running clothes.
A visored hat and suntan lotion can be considered a necessity. Since it is now spring and you most likely have not been tanning all year, it would be beneficial to protect yourself from the sun's rays as you will be spending a lot of time on the road (either running it or cheering on your teammates). While you're at it, be sure to pack a decent pair of polarized sunglasses.
DON'T RUN IN PAIN. This one statement cannot be expressed enough. The Wild Miles Relay is simply that: a relay that depends on all its teammates. And it is a relay that ends in less than 30 hours, so don't punish yourself along the race so that you are paying for it months after. It's not worth it and it's why we have a reliable ALTERNATE RUNNER (Chuck Fabijanic) available. I know Chuck well and he wants to run badly, so don't deprive him and punish yourself. If you're hurting or injured, sit out a leg and allow your teammates to help you out!
